STENCILS

"The stencil drawings have authority and power on one hand and surrender and submission on the other.  With the stencil pieces I would say I’m playing both sides."

-Interview with Cindy Hinant, 2016

"I was very fearful about drawing and lines, so even if it was an abstract drawing I didn’t want spontaneity. That’s why I started using stencils. If I wanted a certain line I would draw it, make a stencil from it, and then throw the original away. I’d use the stencil to trace the new line so there would always be a lag between the expressive gesture and the final, mechanically reproduced result, almost like a graphic process. The spontaneous part was gone but in the end I still had the line and the process somehow made it concrete."
